چکیده

1. Glomerular filtration, wate rconcentration and acid load tests, measurement of urinary protein and cell excretion rates, bacteriological examination of the urine, and analysis of the urinary amino acid content were carried out in eight patients with chronic intravascular haemolysis due to aortic valve replacement. 2. All results were normal except for a slight reduction in creatinine clearance rate in two patients and a slight elevation of urinary protein in a third; these abnormalities were considered of doubtful significance. 3. It is concluded that chronic intravascular haemolysis with its consequent renal haemosiderosis appears not to interfere with renal function.

Haemolysis with Björk-Shiley and Starr-Edwards prosthetic heart valves: a comparative study.

Slater, S. D., Saflam, I. A., Bain, W. H., Turner, M. A., and Lawrie, T. D. V. (1974). Thorax, 29, 624-632. Haemolysis with Bjork-Shiley and Starr-Edwards prosthetic heart valves: a comparative study. A comparison was made of the haemolytic complications in 85 patients with two different types of Starr-Edwards cloth-covered ball and cage prosthesis with those in 44 patients with the Bjork-Shile...

Tricuspid Valve Endocarditis in an Intravenous Drug Abuser: A Case Report

Recently, there have been more reports of cardiac valve infections due to the increasing number of intravenous (IV) drug abusers and chronic renal failure patients. Among cardiac valves, tricuspid valve is most commonly affected in the course of endocarditis. Appropriate management of these patients is a challenging and controversial issue in the field of cardiac surgery. Treatment options in s...

Chronic haemolysis following insertion of ball valve prostheses.

Intravascular haemolysis after the insertion of intracardiac prosthetic material has been reported by Sayed et al. (1961), Verdon, Forrester, and Crosby (1963), Sigler et al. (1963), Gehrmann and Loogen (1964), Reed and Dunn (1964), Marsh (1964), and Yacoub, Rogers, and Taylor (1965). The haemolysis may be sufficient to produce clinical haemolytic anaemia or may cause a compensated haemolytic s...

Intravascular haemolysis after valve replacement: comparative study between Starr-Edwards (ball valve) and Björk-Shiley (disc valve) prosthesis.

Seventy-four patients with single prosthetic valves (Björk-Shiley or Starr-Edwards) in the mitral or aortic position and 18 controls with rheumatic valvar heart disease were investigated for evidence of intravascular haemolysis. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was used as the most sensitive indicator of haemolysis. Raised concentrations were found in a third of 39 patients with Björk-Shiley p...

Serum Lactate Dehydrogenase Elevation

Activity of total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and that of the heat-stable isozyme (LDH-1) was measured by the method of Strandjord and Clayson in the serum of 62 cardiac patients with congenital and valvular heart disease before and after cardiac catheterization and at follow-up examination after cardiac surgery. A universal elevation of both total and heat-stable LDH was found in patients with...
